Tesla is succeeding because it doesn't have to make a profit. It basically breaks even on its cars and sells them in large part off the backs of subsidies, while making the bulk of its recent profits off ventures that are distinctly not cars. If it were a gas car company, it would have gone under. The difference is that, as long as it markets itself as a tech company rather than a car company, it never actually has to make a profit to get investor dollars, just like how WeWork, by marketing itself as a tech company rather than a real estate company, hasn't made a profit for years, or how Apple sunk millions into (literally) a premium several hundred dollar juicer startup. Eventually as adoption grows it will obviously start making money by economies of scale, but until then, it's only gotten this far because it's R&D budget could be more than some modest automakers' market caps with no qualms from investors. And while Tesla investors expect it to do this, GM and BMW investors actually expect profit from their companies, limiting how much money they can pour into R&D or new directions. Tesla didn't succeed by marketing their cars, they succeeded by marketing their stock.

Partnerships never work. A big reason for the tesla's success is their focus, they only make electric cars, all the resources go to develope their eletric cars, they dont have to spend time with other gas cars line.

The reality is Tesla doesn't make any money from selling its cars and that's despite some really risky business practices like releasing tech before the kind of testing most automakers would do because big automakers are far more scared of the legal risk. For example Mercedes are ahead of Tesla with self driving tech and have been researching it for far longer but are not willing to release it to consumer because they would rather someone else took that legal risk. Tesla sells to tech geeks and nerds obsessed with the brand where as most car companies sell to customers who are not really that bothered about cars. In fact I can see that being Teslas downfall, once its not just people interested in the car and your nan has a Tesla to go to the bingo and crashes because of confusion with the autopilot feature like people did with sat navs then Tesla might be sued out of existence.

Unions will do everything to stop the dinosaurs from creating EV cars. The amount of parts and labour is a night and day comparison that requires much fewer man-hours to build. Bloated manufactures cannot compete with streamlined manufacturing.

Tesla is on top in the EV market right now because the big boys aren't really going all out on EVs... yet. They are dipping their toes and making one or two EVs to test the waters but they are all really still busy with ICE cars and maybe hybrids because that is what most people are still buying nowadays. In truth, the big boys just don't see Tesla as a threat. BUT, as soon as the trend becomes more definite in the way of EVs and the big boys know for sure that investing in EV (and FSD) tech is the safest bet to make the most money in a relatively short time frame, they are going to start showering money to develop their true Tesla killers and I'm 100% certain they will topple Tesla from the top shortly after that. They have the capital and the brains to do so. Tesla may have a 5 year head start compared to other companies but Tesla's hardware isn't really anything too special. They just seem special because Musk loves to use fancy words to make them seem special and Muskheads always fall for it. Hook, line, and sinker. Their computer for example is just based on NVIDIAs platform with in house chip and some modifications. Do people really think that NVIDIA (and their theoretical future partners) won't be able to catch up on that field in a very short time once the big money starts flowing in? Designing and building that stuff literally NVIDIA's specialty. Right now they just don't have the incentive to do so because they have no big partners to help foot the bill and the gaming market is still their most lucrative source of income. The only TRUE advantage tesla has is their software and the data they have to train said AI. But who says that it will hold for long? BMW or VW or Mercedes can partner with NVIDIA and Google/Waymo and poof, Tesla's "huge" FSD advantage is gone. Even if said companies only work with NVIDIA to get the HW, do people really think they don't have the money to hire the best self driving experts or poach Tesla's experts once they feel that FSD is a necessary tech to sell cars? Tesla's lead is bound to disappear as soon as the big boys truly try to kill Tesla.

East-European here and why I couldn`t care less about Tesla 1) Too expensive 2) No infrastructure for it 3) Too little battery 4) If it " fuels " longer then 2-5 minute then I do not want it 5) Electronic based cars are not ideal when everything is in ICE and SNOW. 6) Interior design is not for me, by that I mean not enough organizers inside, a singular " tabled based " control thing is plainly inconvenient for me. 7) Exterior design is well..debatable, but I just kinda feel nothing when i look at Tesla front side. 8) I couldn`t possible care less about its autopilot, heck im not even using cruise control in my car, like..ever. I like driving car myself, with a manual, I like to " feel " car. 9) Our roads are BAD, not even every SUV have chances to survive driving while ignoring potholes and hatches. Soo, why would I pay more and have less joy then regular engine petrol/diesel? Why I would need to sacrifice convenience and practicality? Maybe somewhere in my rant is a reason why EVs dont have a solid profit, since a lot of people dont even see them as cars, more like a big toy for rich people.

I've been driving my dad's tesla on and off now since September and I hate it. The screen is distracting, everything is thorough the screen, everything uses the battery so it does quicker. I miss buttons. Knowing where everything is so I don't have to go through 3 screens to find one thing that on a standard car would take one touch. Regenerative braking is a nightmare for first time users. It feels like a new driver is driving, as soon as you let go of the throttle the regenerative braking quickly jerks the car and slows it down. You can't keep your car on and play music when you leave, and if you only have the card key you're not able to turn on the car, walk away, and warm it up. Because as soon as you close the drivers door the car turns off.

Yeah interesting, well the Japanese might just have Toyota to probably partner with Apple or something to make their own EV. Better yet a company that makes TVs, radios, and game consoles are also making an EV car. One day that Tesla competitor or that real Tesla killer that make their cars also make TVs yep they even made your game console. That company is called Sony. A company that makes TVs will be the real Tesla Killer one day!

When is Tesla going to get big public bids to partner with a “big” car manufacturer? License it’s tech to somebody and cash in. I really see a company biting the bullet soon and paying through the nose to get their foothold established. Either that or they are waiting for Tesla to “fail” and get the tech on the cheap. Personally, I thought Ford was headed to them, but it looks like Ford will soon fail based on it’s reliance on two to three basic models. The F150, Transit and Mustang. They’ve lost a large fleet base getting rid of the small Ranger and Crown Vic. Plus, the pricing is no longer better than the foreign and arguably more reliable options. It’s fallen to relying on a brand loyalty that could swing hard soon. Going the same route as Harley. Overpriced and aging. I miss both my Rangers, the Bronco II and even my ‘78 Ranger that got literally 9 mpg, but these days, the bang for buck truck is a Toyota. Any Japanese company making sedans has them beat in that market. If you want performance, it’s just as easy to look elsewhere and get a more reliable, consistent vehicle that matches it’s price point.

modern car companies are unable to compete with tesla because the times have changed since the days of tucker. its really hard to sabotage startup companies that have enough publicity to use as insurance. but seriously, tesla was never ment to be anything but a test bed for their self driving AI. in order to do this they had to create a fully software based vehicle to deliver feedback to their r&d. its an investment for future payouts and even elon musk has stated that tesla will be dissolved when they are satisfied with the AI development.
