Last time we took the Miata to the track we ran into so many cooling issues! So we decided it was time to get rid of the old crappy radiator and old cooling bits in order to stop the overheating problems! We went with all the best bits from Flyin’ Miata, BUT upgrading your radiator with the fanciest thing out there might not be the best move for YOUR car. Today we are revamping the entire cooling system on the Miata and talking how to effectively keep your car cool!
Thanks to Flyin’ Miata for sending us all these sick cooling parts!

yeah im sorry, but even on a race track, the fact that ur stock miata was overheating has 0 to do with stock cooling not being enough. it was just worn out. You can take pretty much any stock car with stock cooling that isn't worn out, flog it all day on a racetrack and it wont overheat. Only time upgraded cooling is required is if internals been changed (as in bored out) or its been boosted from stock Ive flogged my k24 accord euro on race track and gauge temp doesn't go past the middle, same as if im just bumming around town. Dont get me wrong, if ur cooling system is worn out, makes sense to upgrade, especially if ur gunna mod it in future, but there will be literally 0 difference upgrading the stock cooling system on a stock engine.

If you drill a hole in the thermostat flange (1/8" maybe) it helps purge the air from the water system when filling it and has almost no effect on coolant flow. It worked in my '78 Nova 305, anyway. EDIT: Bleeder valve? So fancy. So Japanese.

For some reason this video isn't in the money pit playlist and i almost missed it. I only noticed it because there was a different radiator in the beginning of the intake video and in the end of the head gasket video there was a comment about the radiator. So it made me stop and look before i went to much further. There is also a weird thing that happens with the audio in the first half of the video. The audio keeps oscillating back and forth.

Dropped an aluminum rad in my 98 accord after blowing the top and bottom seals of a new stock radiator (240k miles and head gasket is starting to go) and haven't had any issues since. Worth the price even at double the cost of a plastic rad

Heat transfer in this case is performed through a forced convective mechanism. To observe why the cross flow radiator is better in this case we will need to understand the variables relationships. From Newton's law of cooling we observe that the rate of heat transfer, q, is given by: q=hA(T_initial-T_final). Where, h is the heat transfer coefficient and A is the surface area of the tube. For this purpose we will not focus too much on the temperature differential as we will want to focus on why the bigger, crossflow radiator performs better and the temperature differential can assumed to be the same in both cases for analysis purposes. To find h, we find this from the fluid properties and is related by the Nusselt number, Nu, and for a cylinder. Where Nu=(hD)/k where D is the diameter of the tube and k is the thermal conductivity. Since by increasing the length of the tubes, we effectively decrease the diameter. When we rearrange for h, h=(Nu*k)/D, we observe that h will increase when D decreases. To observe the effect of velocity we look at the Churchill Bernstein equation for a cylinder in crossflow (this equation is very long, just google it), however we observe that the Reynolds number is the numerator, and therefore we will increase Nu with an increasing Reynolds number. We observe that the reynolds number for a cylinder is given by: Re=(rho*v*D)/(dynamic viscosity). where, rho = density, v= velocity, D=diameter. Therefore as we increase the velocity of the fluid, we notice that the Nusselt number increases proportionally to this. Looking back to the equation for the heat transfer coefficient, it also increases with an increasing Nusselt number, therefore the heat transfer coefficient is proportional to a velocity increase. Lastly, we observe that as we decrease the diameter of the tubes, we notice from common sense we can fit more tubes into our constrained radiator area. Therefore, we are increasing the surface area of heat transfer. And when we observe that as A increases, q increases from Newton's law of cooling. Therefore, we increase the heat transfer rate further. In summary, as we increase the length of the tubes we effectively decrease the diameter. Also, as we decrease the the diameter of the tubes, we can fit more in our constrained area of the radiator, which increase the surface area of heat transfer and thereby the heat transfer rate. Lastly, when we increase the fan size, we increase the velocity of the air and increase the heat transfer rate. Your comment about gravity and that the fluid remains longer in the tubes for heat transfer is simply incorrect. As stated previously an increased velocity is better for heat transfer, and in fact gravity is negligible in analysis and the pressure of the coolant system and the velocity of air from the fan dominates our heat transfer. It is more so to do with that from left to right (looking at the car) we can easily increase the length of our tubes easier than up and down. And for the reasons mentioned before is better for heat transfer rate. Source: I am a Mechanical Engineer

I wouldn't trust mixing that old GREEN coolant that was clearly still in the engine block, with that blue asian coolant you put in it. In my experience, bad things happen over time (like very pre-mature water pump failures). Those two coolants use different chemicals for corrosion protection, and a lot of times they create an acidic by product when you mix them, that can destroy parts of your cooling system (water pump, or even worst case cause a head gasket failure). IMO you should always FLUSH out your entire cooling system with water if you are changing the base coolant to a different product. You NEVER know how the different additives will react with one another, despite manufacturer claims of compatibility. There, now that's something you know too.

Sure antifreeze helps with lubrication and corrosion but that isn't the main purpose. When mixed with water it changes freezing and boiling point. Water freezes at 32°F and boils around 212°F and you never want either boiling or frozen coolant. The higher the antifreeze ratio then it freezes at a lower temp and boils at a higher temp.

Rust residue in your cooling system IS abnormal. It indicates corrosion which is from a lack of maintenance. Did you drain the block as well? You want as much new coolant as possible. Put some water wetter also. That will help the heat transfer. Good luck with your project.
