When the topic of reliability comes up, its doesn't take long until the name Toyota is mentioned. Whether its million mile Tundras, indestructible Supras, your grandpas Corolla that just wont die even though the oil hasn't been changed in 5 years. many manufacturers make a reliable car here and there or maybe and era of reliable cars, but few OEMs make as many tried and true cars as Toyota. So what's their secret? in this video Nolan explains exactly what Toyota has done to make reliable car after reliable car. We take an in depth look at the concepts of Jidoka, Kaizen, and JIT. Don't know what that means? then you've got a video to watch!

The company I work for subscribes to the Kaizen philosophy sort of. I came up with a way to aid those in part of the production line by using a inexpensive tool, but no one has come back to me nor implemented my simple idea of using a tool to aid in the production and assembly of the products we produce. Many companies I have worked for claim to use this philosophy but use it half-heartedly.

While I have never owned a Toyota, "Honda Fan Here," I have driven Toyota's before, but if someone said they were interested in a Toyota I would tell them to go for it they are Stone Cold reliable as well as Honda's. My 2004 CR-V is reliable as a rock and has nearly 200,000 miles on the clock growing up running that many miles on original components would be a miracle, but with Toyota's and Honda's it's commonplace unfortunately since I live in the place where we use salt in the winter there are areas of the car that are beginning to rust. Rust has been an issue for Toyota in the past thankfully they have remedied that issue.

Overcomplex, not overbuilt. A close friend who has been a Toyota tech for the past 15 years broke this down for me. Yes, Toyotas are overbuilt, yes they are more reliable. However, their engineers have made the vehicles increasingly complex in order to keep dealership service departments in business. 20+ billable hours to replace a Tundra steering assembly, 3 billable hours to replace a Prius headlamp bulb. My friend makes a very good living, thanks to Toyota!

My family has a Toyota Sequoia that they got the year I was born and it now has almost 600,000mi on it without a rebuild and the compression is still within spec with one cylinder being at the bottom end of spec. Although it does have another issue I believe it's related to the spark plugs. Instead of fixing it my parents just bought another Sequoia 400k miles now and that seems to be working well.

Looking back to the 80's when the Japanese brands really had a stranglehold on the american compact car market (which turned them into the juggernauts they are today), the Japanese (particularly Toyota and Honda) really locked down 3 things that the Americans struggled with at the time. They had superior manufacturing quality and tolerances, superior materials and better overall engineering.

Everybody ever: Toyotas are ridiculously reliable!!! Me: Our Japan-built '08 Highlander Sport 4WD has had nothing but Toyota dealer service, ON schedule, and currently has 215K miles. After the factory warranty ended, we've enjoyed an exploding transmission (gears and oil on the ground) @ 165K ($5K repair - ouch), failed rear driveshaft, failed clock spring (coiled wire tape for steering wheel controls), leaking A/C condenser, blown external (why why why) rubber VVT oil hose (lucky a driver nearby noticed our oil vapor on the highway!), 4 failed armrests in the door cards... Those are the big ones.

FYI, JIT (Just In Time) is about keeping low stock, until needed, rather than trying up capital in stagnant inventory. TCO - if you compare a low-end Corolla to a premium Infinity that costs twice as much, of course annual cost will be higher - you would be better to use a comparable model, such as the Nissan Sentra, or Honda Civic for comparison.

10:22 is why I won't buy from Toyota. 282 HP from a V8? What is this, 1978? the 5.0 in my V8 puts out 650 hp and 610 ft lb of torque (supercharged). Will it break faster than the Toyota? Probably, but I only have 1 life and Id rather my truck do 0-60 in 4 seconds than 7-8 seconds. Just buy a new one when it breaks, what else are you going to do with the money you make? Pay for kids? No thanks. Now, make a reliable V8 that puts out double that power and we can talk about a purchase.

Kaizen is more about continuous improvement. Change for better is literally the google transaiton. Kaizen is more, to reach the big goals you continue to make small changes to improve. And a focus on the small improvements we make now not the big goal, continuously.

Well, the concepts looks good but they seems a little mixed up at times in the video, for example when you talked about stopping the production line that's not a Kaizen, it's part of the Jidoka process of each process having its own quality procedure and that's named: "Stop, Call and wait", indeed Toyota have Kaizen but that means that every employee can suggest an improvement, with the rule that if you suggest... You must participate in the solution design and implementation

I am a wholesaler who deals in 8 to 12+ year old cars or so regularly. I have been in the automotive field for 20 years and started the business 5 years ago..... I see a LOT of cars and test a lot of cars. I dont think people realize how unbelievably reliable they are. There is so little that fails its increible. When you factor in their inexpensive price... its truly shocking. Nothing is on their tier in the passenger car department. Not even honda. They are in a class on their own with no one near them and are very underrated/undervalued for how long they last but I see prices starting to catch up. Their batteries and battery systems last longer than anyone else as well..I could see a future where toyota is the only mass passenger car manufacturer. I would HIGHLY recommend investing in Toyota.
